"Taking shot put and discus technique to new......  Distances

~~I am Luke Sullivan, a former college All-American, and 2 time Olympic Trials discus thrower. In 2008, after suffering multiple injuries during the season, I officially retired from the sport of competitive track & field. After throwing 199' 9' at the Salinas Invitational in Northern California, my body finally gave out and although qualifying for my third Olympic Trials, I decided not to compete. Now, my primary goal is helping people achieve fitness as well as coach high school shot put and discus throwers. I have been hosting throws clinics in my home state of Wisconsin for 7 years and have always found great joy in helping kids achieve their goals. As I move onto my new career path, one of my dreams is to host throws clinics across the midwest and try and help as many athletes as I can. Growing up, my father was my coach and aided me greatly in my success as a competitor. He was a wonderful coach both as a motivator and technician. Now, I am taking the 20 years of throwing and knowledge and putting it into coaching. I have learned from the best and now I would like to do my part for the sport that enabled me to fulfill my dreams! I threw discus, shot-put, and hammer at UCLA. I learned under the tutelage of legendary throwing coach Art Venegas and trained with some of the top throwers in the world. In high school, I played three sports, including football, wrestling, and track. Excelling at all three, I became an All-Area defensive tackle in football, an All-State heavyweight wrestler, and was the nations #1 prep discus thrower in 1994. I was born on June 4th, 1976 in Keene, New Hampshire, but grew up in the small town of Verona, Wisconsin. My father, Bill, runs a small lawn-care service while my mother, Sharon, was a nurse for 33 years at St Mary's Hospital in Madison. My brother, Josh, recently started his own business, following in the foot steps of my father. In September of 2006, I moved to Phoenix, AZ to train full time to prepare myself to make the 2008 Summer Olympic Team. I was trained by Dave Dumble, the head throws coach at Arizona State University. I trained daily with the world shot put champion, John Godina, Vince Mosca, and Jeremy Silverman. In 2007, a new addition to our training group, the American Record holder in the javelin, Breaux Greer arrived on the scene. John and Breaux provided phenomenal weight room programs to not only improve my strength, but turn me into a better overall athlete. Lastly, I would like to thank Dave Dumble for all of the time and effort that he spent training me. A lot of time that could have been spent fixing up his house or relaxing by the pool. But like clock work, every week Dave would be out there excited to work with me. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him and his innate ability to fix techncal flaws and motivate athletes. His explanations and ability to not only tell you, but show you what you are doing sets him apart from all other coaches. I am eternally grateful...... In February of 2011 I took the position of Assistant Throws Coach at Cactus Shadows High School, in the Cave Creek School District. This is my first time coaching a team for an entire season and I am finding success working through the ups and downs of high school dramas! So far it has been a pleasure and a truly enjoyable experience.
